Rating: 4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Genre: Mystery

From the Publisher:

The first book in a highly original and delightfully clever crime series in which Queen Elizabeth II secretly solves crimes while carrying out her royal duties.

The morning after a dinner party at Windsor Castle, eighty-nine-year-old Queen Elizabeth is shocked to discover that one of her guests has been found murdered in his room, with a rope around his neck.

When the police begin to suspect her loyal servants, Her Majesty knows they are looking in the wrong place. For the Queen has been living an extraordinary double life ever since her coronation. Away from the public eye, she has a brilliant knack for solving crimes.

With her household’s happiness on the line, her secret must not get out. Can the Queen and her trusted secretary Rozie catch the killer, without getting caught themselves?

The Windsor Knot is the first book in the ‘Her Majesty The Queen Investigates’ mystery series by SJ Bennett – for fans of The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, Agatha Christie and M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin.

My thoughts:

S.J. Bennett has written a delightful book, which is not how I would normally describe a murder mystery. She gives us an intimate, inside look at how Queen Elizabeth II’s household works and a very human portrait of the Queen herself. The Queen has hosted a “Dine and Sleep” event at Windsor Castle. Late at night, a talented Russian pianist and dancer is murdered. The story takes place in 2016, shortly before the Queen’s 90th birthday and she shows that she is totally “with it”, no matter her advanced age. She delights in her horses and her dogs, sure, but she asks very insightful questions about the sad event at Windsor Castle. Much of the investigative footwork is done by her Assistant Personal Secretary, Rozie Oshodi, who is a very resourceful young woman. The idea behind this series is that the Queen has been solving mysteries for many years, but always keeping herself behind the scenes. She has keen observation skills indeed. In this story, she manages to make the official investigators think all her good ideas are actually theirs! The audiobook is narrated beautifully by Jane Copland.
